Weekly Update, September 17, 2010

Remedial Investigation field work commenced in late March at the former Metropolitan Works MGP as part of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC)-approved Remedial Investigation Work Plan (RIWP).  The work includes the installation of soil borings, monitoring wells, test pit excavations, and indoor air and sub-slab soil vapor points to gather information required to determine the nature and extent of impacts at the former Metropolitan Works MGP. 

Activities Week of September 13– September 17:

  • Completed SB-9 boring and installation of monitoring well triplet (MW-9S, MW-9I, and MW-9D) adjacent to Gowanus Canal.
  • Completed surface soil sampling at three locations adjacent to Gowanus Canal.
  • Completed survey of all newly installed wells and soil borings.

Future (two week look - ahead) activities:

  • Complete removal of drill rig from work area adjacent to Gowanus Canal using crane contractor.
  • Complete well development at well triplet (MW-9S, MW-9I, and MW-9D) adjacent to canal.
  • Complete aquifer testing at select well locations and groundwater sampling at all well locations.
